Swiss Bern – an amazing city. A great place to spend vacation.
Bern city was founded in 1191. Bern got its name from a legend. This legend describes a certain Duke Berthold, who was fond of hunting, and made a promise when founding the city that he would name the city after the first animal he would meet when hunting. As a result, the first animal the Duke met when hunting was a bear. This is how the city was named Bern, which means “bear” in German.
Bern is situated on a peninsula washed by the Aare river on three sides. Such a location of the city was beneficial from a strategical point of view, especially when defending it. Many buildings of the historic part of Bern city have been preserved through present. One of such buildings is the Cathedral of Bern. It took 472 years to build the church, which is simply amazing. The bell tower of the Cathedral is the highest in Switzerland. It is 100 meters high. At the entrance to the Cathedral, there are statues representing a picture of the Last judgment of people.
Bern is famous for its clock tower called Zytglogge, which was built at the beginning of the 13th century. Translated from German, the tower’s name means the bell of time. The clock belongs to the three oldest clocks in Switzerland. Throughout its history, this clock tower has undergone changes and restorations. It is 23 meters high.
Bern is also famous for its numerous fountains, with their quantity exceeding one hundred. These fountains were aimed at supplying the population with water; it is surprising that even nowadays their intended use hasn’t changed.
In the city center, a moat with a small park called Barengraben is located. That’s the place where bears live, who are the symbol of Bern city. Besides, there is a bear square, a bear park, and many other places to honour the city symbol.
Museums are scattered all over the city: the Bern Historical Museum, the Military Museum, The Albert Einstein House, the Swiss Alps Museum, the Tram Museum, etc. Bern itself covers an area of 51.6 square kilometers. It’s a small but extremely attractive city, which is a high cultural heritage of the whole globe. This is evidenced by a variety of buildings that convey the medieval atmosphere.
Trees and shrubs on the streets are a special highlight of this city, which is a great effort of the local population. Simply everywhere visitors can find uncommon shapes made of green arrangements.
